Canary Wharf Crossrail Roof Blossoms

The first tree has today been crane lifted through the semi open-air timber lattice roof above the Canary Wharf Crossrail station. The planting of the new magnolia marks the beginning of the roof garden that will become a retail and leisure destination from May 2015, three years ahead of Crossrail trains running through the station.

The magnolia tree sits at the Park level which is 2 storeys above the dock water level. Canary Wharf Group plc began work on the new Crossrail Station in May 2009 in a project which will bring London’s latest infrastructure development to Canary Wharf. Above the station the Group is developing 115,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space over five storeys.

The unique timber roof design by Foster + Partners spans 310m along its length and is filled with 780 triangular ETFE pillows which are continually filled with air. A key advantage to this structure is to allow air flow and natural irrigation to reach the plants on roof garden, working in tandem with the landscaped area. The variety of plants have been selected by landscape architects Gillespies as a nod to the heritage of the Docklands, where plant collectors bought exotic plants from new continents into the UK for the first time.

Canary Wharf Group’s retail and leisure development above the new Crossrail Station, combined with the recent Jubilee Place extension, represents one of the largest retail expansions currently underway in the UK. The development will include a mix of shops, restaurants, bars and an Everyman cinema. As the newly planted trees grow and come into bloom, so too will Canary Wharf’s ambitious expansion of the lifestyle and retail offering on the estate.
