Lucas Taylor, the number one ranked tennis player in the UK at under 13 level, has won the Canary Wharf Sports Personality of the Year Award.
13 year-old Taylor was presented the award at a glittering ceremony at Canary Wharf’s East Wintergarden last night by Perri Shakes-Drayton, herself a previous winner of the Award in 2005 and an East London-based hopeful for the Great Britain athletics team at the London 2012 Olympics.
Shakes-Drayton, who recently won two Bronze medals at the European Athletics Championships, offered strong encouragement to the assembly of young sports people, telling them to “find a sport that you love and put all your efforts into it.”
Taylor hails from Tower Hamlets and trains in Hackney. He received the prize in front of a number of local dignitaries who passed on their congratulations, including the Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman.
The evening marked the tenth anniversary of Canary Wharf Sports Awards and the twentieth anniversary of Canary Wharf Group’s support of the community.
Taylor is a past winner of the British Junior Under 12 Singles and Doubles Championships and juggles his school work with high level tournaments around the UK and Europe; in the past year he has played in Finland, Slovakia, Iceland, Spain and Ireland.
John Garwood, Group Company Secretary at Canary Wharf Group plc, said:
“Canary Wharf Group supports local sport as it is one of the best ways to help the local community integrate and develop. Sport unites people of all ages and backgrounds; it teaches people to achieve success and how to persevere.”
“I suggest people take a good look at tonight’s winners, as they could soon be achieving great things on the national and international stage,” he said
