MEDIA RELEASE SEPTEMBER 2011

Autumn music and the return of the popular Comedy Club – Canary Wharf’s outstanding events programme continues

Whilst summer may be drawing to a close, Canary Wharf continues its world-class programme of events, announcing the return of the ‘ After Hours with…’ series and Canary Wharf Comedy Club. This vibrant shopping and business district unveils two superb evenings of musical entertainment and two of spectacular stand-up, which will no doubt draw enthusiastic crowds to Canary Wharf’s prestigious East Wintergarden.

Kicking off a musical month, After Hours with…Penguin Café on Friday 7 October 2011 offers a unique experience to enjoy Arthur Jeffes and his talented orchestra perform their trademark fusion of folk, jazz and classical music. Son of the Penguin Café Orchestra’s original founder Simon Jeffes, Arthur unites talented musicians to cast aside the rigidities of classical music and the limitations of rock to deliver vivacious melodies. Featuring outstanding luminaries from The Royal College of Music, Neil Coding of Suede and Gorillaz’ regular Cass Browne, Penguin Café have performed at the Royal Opera House, Edinburgh Festival and at countless festivals and concerts across Europe. The event will no doubt be a memorable evening.

Continuing the homage to the UK’s finest home-grown talent, British Sea Power will play a sold-out gig on Friday 21 October 2011 bringing an eccentric mix of pop, indie, alternative rock and even a hint of Jamaican disco to Canary Wharf. After Hours with…British Sea Power is sure to provide an evening of eloquent, yet nonetheless eccentric, material.

For those in search of an evening of quick-witted humour, Canary Wharf Comedy Club will host two spectacular evenings of standup on Tuesday 25 October and Tuesday 8 November 2011. October’s event sees comedy heavyweights Pete Firman, Lucy Porter, Mike Wilmot, Prince Abdi and Will Smith take to the stage with everything from anarchic mischief to infectious English absurdity. Later in November, fast-paced political commentator Andrew Maxwell, ‘one to watch’ Jimmy McGhie, Welsh comedian’s comedian Mike Bubbins, Time Out Critics Choice Sara Pascoe and part comedian-part jazz musician Charlie Baker will raise the roof with raucous laughter.

Canary Wharf Comedy Club and After Hours with… series’ are the latest in a string of exciting events that have taken place this year at Canary Wharf. As part of the estate’s impressive Arts & Events schedule, this iconic destination continues to deliver first-class performances to an ever-growing community of Canary Wharf residents, workers and visitors looking for some of the Capital’s best cultural events.

Sian Astrop, Arts & Events Manager at Canary Wharf Group plc comments: “We are delighted to add Penguin Café and British Sea Power to our list of outstanding artists that have performed here and pleased to present two more superb Comedy Clubs, each with a line up of first-rate comedians. These events will complement the vast range on offer in our Arts & Events programme which recognizes and appeals to the tastes of Canary Wharf’s diverse communities.”
